MXM supports education in all areas including hair and beauty. This month we are focusing our education initiative on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) fields. A great way to merge STEAM and beauty is to discuss the big role science plays in hair growth and maintenance. So let's talk about hair!

We have all heard the myth that "If you don't wash your hair everyday or every other day, it's dirty!" Well, let's break down the science that invalidates this myth.

Hair follicles usually have sebaceous glands attached. Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum. Then, sebum travels through the hair follicle onto your strands of hair.  Since curly or coily hair have such a unique pattern, it slows the spread of sebum as it travels down strands of hair. As a result, curly and coily hair can:

  • Take longer to get coated with oils and collect dirt.
  • Require less washes due to the time it takes to get dirty.

As a result, people with curly or coily can strip their hair of key nutrients by washing too frequently. Everyone's hair is different, so before settling into a hair routine. Talk to a natural hair professional that can analyze the science of your hair texture and tailor your regimen to you!
